What is a Passive House?
Passive House, also known by the German term Passivhaus, is an international performance standard. It sets measurable targets for energy demand, comfort and airtightness instead of prescribing a particular architectural style or material palette.
A certified Passive House typically brings together five core principles:
Appropriate levels of continuous insulation
An airtight building envelope
High-performance windows and doors
Careful reduction of thermal bridges
Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery
Passive House is not the same as passive-solar design
The terms are often confused.
Passive-solar design uses orientation, glazing, shading and thermal mass to respond to the local climate. These are valuable design strategies, but they are not the same as the Passive House standard.
Passive House is a defined performance and quality-assurance methodology. It can incorporate passive-solar thinking, but it also addresses airtightness, thermal bridges, mechanical ventilation, energy modelling and onsite testing.
